We've listed some of the ways you can volunteer below. Other assignments may be available that are not listed here. We also may have special short-term projects that we need assistance with from time to time. All volunteers will be subject to a background check.
Volunteer assignments are usually Monday-Friday, between hours of 8:00 a.m . & 4:30 p.m., unless otherwise noted.
Volunteer Transportation Network (Van) Drivers: Transport ambulatory outpatients receiving treatment at the local medical center and/or one of our Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) to appointments at these facilities. To fill this role, you must have a current driver license, automobile insurance, receive mandatory training, and pass a physical exam. Hours vary, but normal hours are usually between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Especially need drivers for the following areas: Blair, Bedford, Cambria, Centre, Clearfield, Clinton, Indiana, Mifflin and Somerset counties.
Volunteer Patient Reminder Caller: Contact patients by telephone to remind patients of their scheduled appointments. Presently have a need in Behavioral Health and some clinic areas, approximately four hours per day. Possible Community Based Outpatient Clinics will also need assistance.
Patient Escort Volunteers: Escort patients (push wheelchairs or walk with ambulatory patients) to their scheduled appointments in the medical center, and delivering charts, or other items to various areas of the medical center. Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Various openings are available for mornings or afternoons.
Nursing Unit Volunteers: Assist staff on medical unit and/or Community Living Center (CLC) with various duties, i.e., passing fresh water, running errands, visit with the Veterans, etc. Various days of the week/weekend are available. Open hours.
Recreation Therapy Volunteer: Assist recreation staff with various activities held for the hospitalized Veterans. Monday through Friday, afternoons from approx. 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Some evening and weekend days are also open for volunteers to assist in recreation/special activities, i.e., holiday decorating, outings with CLC residents, CLC brunches, etc -those times may vary.
Visitor Center/Wall That Heals Volunteer: Volunteers are needed various days/times, Sunday-Saturday, to man the Visitor Center at our Wall That Heals. Hours are between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. daily.
VA Point of Service Kiosk Volunteer Assistant: Assist Veterans in using the VA Point of Service Kiosk to pre-register and check in for their appointments. The pre-registration process involves review and, in the near future, making needed changes to their address, phone number, next of kin, and insurance information. Many Veterans have problems using the kiosks and need assistance to complete the pre-registration and appointment check in. New features will be added to the kiosks soon, and there will be additional upgrades for the volunteers to explain to the Veterans. Need approximately 15 volunteers per day, Monday thru Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Minimum of 3-4 hours per day/shift. This will include the main hospital in Altoona, as well as the Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) in Dubois, Johnstown, and State College.
*NOTE: All potential volunteers will go through an interview process, training sessions, and background check, in addition to any specific training or tests that may be required for certain assignments.
